About Us

The New York Vipassana Association (NYVA) is one of over 200 organizations worldwide dedicated to offering courses in Vipassana meditation, as taught by S.N. Goenka and his assistant teachers in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin. NYVA supports a local community of Vipassana meditators—around 12,000 people—in the New York metropolitan area, including New York City, Long Island, the lower Hudson Valley, and northern New Jersey. We operate the NYC Dhamma House, and offer regular group sittings, courses for children and teens, and other activities.

In 2012, a group of dedicated New York City Vipassana meditators opened the NYC Dhamma House, with the support of Dhamma Dharā, a meditation center in Shelburne, Massachusetts. In 2014, NYVA began offering 10-day residential courses in rented locations. Later, in 2015, NYVA was incorporated as an independent 501(c)3 organization. One day, NYVA aims to establish a new full-time meditation center in the region, supplementing Dhamma Dharā and Dhamma Pubbananda.

NYVA continues to be operated 100% by volunteers from the local community of Vipassana meditators, and funded solely through their donations.
